FEVER: a show on feminicide in Oaxaca

In January 2022 we met in Oaxaca Nastya and Paula, two artists and friends who came straight from Poland and Ukraine. It was around a discussion on feminicide that the idea of creating a show where we could explore this theme by using different artistic techniques came up. We decided to articulate our show on feminicide around the character of Rosa Elvira Cely, died in 2012 due to atrocious sexual abuse and whose story moved the whole world.

The tragic story of a young mother

Born in Bogota, Rosa was 35 when her life ended. While studying to become a psychologist, on June 1, 2012, a classmate offers to bring her back home; she gladly accepts and this decision will mark the beginning of her nightmare. Raped, tortured, and impaled, she managed to reach the authorities, who found her, unconscious, several hours later in the Bogota National Park. Taken urgently to the hospital, the sequelae are such that she succumbs to her injuries a few days later. The next day, a huge protest is organized in the country. In response to this tragedy, the government in 2015 enacted the 1761 law against feminicide. A victory which will have cost the lives of many women and which we wanted to denounce in our show.

Art as a tool of denunciation

Our company wishes to support women in their independence and freedom, in a world where violence against them still rages. This show on feminicide is a tribute to Rosa but also to all those who lost their lives.

“We created our performance in a hybrid way with the flow of a TV show, where the presenter slowly remembers episodes of sexual violence.”

Perfectly played by Julia, the audience can observe the changes of the protagonist and enter into her inner and sensitive world. Highlighted by the music of Stéphane, Manu and Jacopo, the images projected by Nastya and Paula come to sublimate the poignant words of Manuel, and thus awaken the different senses and emotions of the spectator.

A case that echoes the situation in the state of Oaxaca

In this region of the world, rape culture is pervasive and deeply rooted, where laws do not seem to exist. According to the UN Women, Mexico is the Latin American country with the highest rate of homicides against women. And despite the 1994 convention adopted for the protection of women in Latin America, it still has a high crime rate.

According to another report by Amnesty International on feminicide in Mexico, 3,723 women were murdered in 2020. Often dismissed, it is not uncommon for these crimes to be recorded in the state of Oaxaca.

“Beyond the project of our association, it seems essential to us to contribute and work at our level, for a fairer world.”

And if in Europe the number of cases identified is much lower, the reality is not so different.

Written and thought out in our residence in Mazunte; we locked ourselves away for more than a month to create this show about women and for women. It starts from the common desire to question through different artistic means our actions taken straight from the collective unconscious.

Passive cooling by convection:

Hot air escapes through the hole in the roof.
It draws cool air through the three tubes running through the berm.
The hotter it gets, the stronger is the ventilation.

Enfriamiento pasivo por convección:

El aire caliente se escapa por el orificio del techo.
Extrae aire fresco a través de los tres tubos que atraviesan la berma.
Cuanto más caliente se pone, más potente es la ventilación.

Benefits of a green roof:

Layers of gravel, soil, plants, and water protect the space beneath from heating up.
Catches and filters rain water.
Looks pretty, especially when the flowers are in bloom.

What it means to be fully autonomous:

Water from the rain is harvested, stored, and used on the property.
A photovoltaic system is going to produce our electricity.
The building is going to meet its own water and energy needs.

What does a reciprocal roof do:

Each roof beam is resting on the one on its right, while holding up the one on its left.
The overall weight of the roof es evenly distributed.
This gives us a huge floor space of 10 meters in diameter.

We want to appreciate even the smallest donations! One way of doing this is by adding the name of everyone who helped us with even just one Euro, on a huge mural we are planing to have painted on our property. It will be of a big tree, and each of its leaves is going to represent one donor, volunteer, supporting artist, etc.

¡Queremos agradecer incluso las donaciones más pequeñas! Una forma de hacerlo es agregando el nombre de todos los que nos ayudaron con tan solo un euro, en un gran mural que planeamos pintar en nuestra propiedad. Será de un árbol grande, y cada una de sus hojas representará a un donante, voluntario, artista de apoyo, etc.

This impressive bull was painted by Mexican illustrator Juan Carlos Silva, who offered his support by designing a digital postcard for our campaign. Since working together with many other arts of all directions is what Itínera is all about, we feel especially privileged to help him as much as he is helping us. The image on the postcard is not going to be this bull, but instead something more closely related to our project. Everyone donating €10 or more will get a digital postcard by this artist.

Ya que, trabajar junto con muchas otras artes es de lo que se trata Itínera, nos sentimos especialmente privilegiados de ayudarlo tanto como él nos ayuda a nosotros. La imagen de la postal no va a ser este toro, sino algo más relacionado con nuestro proyecto. Todos los que donen 10 € o más recibirán una postal digital de este artista.

Donations of €25, €50, and €100 we want to reward with real postcards printed on paper. Two other illustrators working with us, Greg Konopski from Poland, and Luis David Cáceres from Colombia, are preparing a set of three cards each, all of them created specifically for our campaign. For a donation of €25 you can pick one of the six. Donors of €50 can have the whole set of three by the illustrator of their choice. And those who want to support us with €100 will get the entire set of both artists.

For very big donations we are planing a very big reward: a huge poster by Ecuadorian illustrator Adrián Bueno. Once again, the image here is just supposed to give you an idea of his style. The actual image is going to be more about … well, an international theater group building a sustainable theater on the beach… or something like that.

Finally, the perk we have planned for donations of the highest amounts, is an online theater / arts workshop, conducted by Itínera, most likely on our premises in Mazunte, and transmitted to anywhere in the world. As always, the idea is to bring the arts and the theater to where there is none. As far as the details go, of how many people want to do exactly what, it is completely up to you. We are happy to help you with precisely what you need. After all, a donation of €1,000 wants to be rewarded properly.

Who we are and what our project is about: We are Tony and Susan Doig, we live on Vancouver Island in Canada, and we’re passionate about sustainability. With our children grown and no longer living at home we are looking forward to the next phase of our lives: retirement with grandchildren!

Our goal is to grow and support a community for intentional building. The Doighouse Learning Center will be used as a learning space for sustainability, intentional building, food security and other related topics. Our Earthship inspired home is currently under construction with the help and support of many volunteers both local and international.
